America’s
first lady, Laura Bush successfully underwent an operation on Saturday to
relieve the pain engendered by pinched nerves in her neck. The White House
announced that lady Bush is in good condition, resting comfortably.
The medical procedure hindered her from joining President
George W. Bush on a trip to Australia,
at the annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in Sydney.
The 2.5-hour medical procedure took place at the George Washington
University Hospital,
under the leading supervision of Dr. Anthony Caputy, chairman of the Department
of Neurosurgery and co-director of the Neurological Institute, in collaboration
with the presidential doctor, Dr. Richard Tubb.
The procedure implied the enlargement of the passageway
where the nerves are located near the spinal column, thus relieving the
pressure. As every patient is different, doctors haven’t set a certain period
of recovery.
The first lady injured a nerve in her neck and shoulder while
hiking earlier this year. Since then, she has been undergoing physical therapy
to alleviate her condition.
While traveling from Sydney
to Hawaii,
President Bush talked to his wife from two to three minutes, as Dana Perino, a
White House spokeswoman reported. She added that, as the US President
told, Laura Bush sounded well and confirmed the success of the operation.
George W. Bush is bound to return to Washington on Sunday and will help his wife
recover from the surgery.
President Bush himself went to the doctor’s a few months
ago. He had a colonoscopy and five growths have been removed from his colon,
fortunately, none of which proved to be of
cancerous nature.
