Firefighters battling the wildfires which already charred terrain across the heart of wine country as well as some forests in Northern California finally got a break as the cool weather turned on their side in their struggle to contain the blaze.
The fire which is spreading very fast by burning into the bone-dry terrain engulfed nearly 6 square miles in Napa County and also reached Solano County. More than 100 buildings are threatened by the wildfires about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento, said Roger Archey, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
However, firefighters managed to contain the blaze 35 percent on Sunday. The fire charred one house. Some people were evacuated from the areas endangered the most, said agency spokeswoman Nancy Carniglia.
Fire rescue teams in southern New Mexico are battling a 67 square miles blaze that started in the Lincoln National Forest, a U.S. Forest Service fire information officer said. More than 46 square miles of terrain with vegetation were consumed by two wildfires sparked by lightning. One fire is burning near Roswell, southern New Mexico, while the other is blazing west of Raton in the northern part of the state.
Several residents south of San Jose were forced to leave their homes as two fires covering nearly 2 square miles were becoming more and more threatening. Firefighters managed to contain 50 percent of the lightning-sparked fires.
More than 175 houses were burned by wildfires in Northern California so far this year. After two very dry months which, authorities said, set a state record, wildfires began popping out just as California's unofficial fire season began in May.
