A 43-story tower under construction at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City suffered “superficial damage” after a fire broke out Sunday morning.
Local authorities say the situation was quickly under control. The blaze erupted between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. and was fully contained before 10 a.m., according to Vincent Jones, director of Atlantic County’s Office of Emergency Management.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no reports of injuries and the fire, which climbed the length of the building, did only “superficial damage,” Atlantic City Fire Captain Michael Mooney said.
The building reportedly suffered no structural damage. Mooney said the fire seemed to start in the breezeway connecting the tower and the main Borgata casino. As metal parts blew off the burning building onto roadways, several roads were closed as a precaution.
The new tower, called “The Water Club,” is a $400 million addition – “the city's first boutique-lifestyle hotel” - that will include 800 guest rooms, a two-story “spa in the sky,” five swimming pools and other luxury amenities, according to the hotel’s website.
Scheduled for an early 2008 opening, the Water Club, “A Signature Hotel by Borgata,” promises to offer even more guests than before the experience of “the luxe lifestyle that defines Borgata.”
Borgata opened in 2003 and claims to have been “the top-grossing casino for all but one month since its debut in Atlantic City.”
It is not clear yet whether the fire could cause a delayed opening.
Borgata President and Chief Operating Officer Larry Mullin met with engineers Sunday to evaluate the tower’s damage. He said he did not know yet whether the fire would change the expected opening in early 2008, reports pressofAtlanticCity.com.
