Some of the leaders of Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) and
American Legion organizations have observed that the number of their members
continued to drop, as older veterans keep dying and no new members come in.
As Memorial Day is a time to remember U.S. military service
and to celebrate our veterans, Ron Peters, commander of VFW Post 212 in
Bradford, Pa., and Bob Clemons, commander of Olean VFW Post 1619 encouraged younger veterans to become members as well and help with the organization
and activities in these communities.
According to the Olen Time Herald,
Peters said that these are not just clubs, making example of the two
scholarships awarded to two high school seniors and of the supplies that these
organizations have gathered to help those in need.
More than that, Veteran of
Foreign Wars organization has been taking care of veterans’ graves during
Memorial Day and was has been present at the parades. The organization has also provided
American flags which were put on the graves.
“We're here for the veterans but
we're also very, very active in the community,” Peters said, according to the
Olen Time Herald.
Clemons said that his organization
is open toganization the
community,"and also takes place at the parades. The have also provided
American flags which were put on veterans who have had full-time duty in
the active military service of the United States. Those
who haven't had full time duty are encouraged to become social members of the
organization.
