Monte Carlo - Roger Federer on Thursday made a rare reversal as he confirmed that he will compete in the Monte Carlo Open starting on Sunday.
The Swiss number 2 had said that his only clay tuneups for Roland Garros would be the Rome and Madrid Masters. But after only limited success on US hardcourts, the 13-time Grand Slam winner decided he needed more court time.
The plan by organisers to reserve a wildcard for the crowd favourite paid off. "Several months ago I announced that Roger had not planned to take part as he had modified his clay court preparation," said tournament boss Zeljko Franulovic.
"But knowing his attachment to the tournament, we never lost hope that he would nevertheless be there this year; we have been proven right and are very proud."
The Swiss has played the last three finals in the principality, losing them all to Rafael Nadal.
