Roger Federer showed his class again and won his fourth Tennis Masters Cup out of six possible so far on the court of the Qi Zhong stadium by defeating Spain's David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
En-route to the final act of the competition the Swiss has showed once again who the boss is by beating great players like Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick. Federer won his 53rd career title after one hour and 38 minutes.
Only three other tennis player have managed to achieve a similar feat and they are: Pete Sampras, who won five, Romania’s Ilie Nastase who is now tied with Federer with four titles and Ivan Llendl, who also won five. However, it looks more than likely that the Swiss will break this record too.
This season Federer won eight titles including three of the four Grand Slams and a prize money total of about eight million dollars. For this title alone he was rewarded with 1.2 million dollars and a silver Mercedes R series car.
The French Open title remains the one major he has yet to win, having lost to Nadal in the Roland Garros final for the past two years.
"It's been a great season for me. And finishing off the best players in the world, you know, also (Rafael) Nadal and all these guys in the Masters Cup.
"It's always a great experience for me. It's only really is going to start coming down on me like next week, and then especially during holidays."
"I'm so happy. This is year-end event and only the best can make it," said Federer.
Spain’s Ferrer gave away his second double-fault of the match to hand Federer a match point and the Swiss wrapped up the match with a crosscourt winner after one hour, 38 minutes. Federer served 30 winners, breaking Ferrer six times on nine chances.
Federer swept the first set after just 26 minutes as he broke the Spaniard twice. With 16 unforced errors Ferrer was in fact an easy target for the Swiss.
However, the Spaniard managed to slowly find his form and stayed level with Federrer in the second set until a crucial error in the seventh game gave the break away for 4-3.
Ferrer continued to struggle and he defended by forcing Federer to save break points in the opening game of the third before breaking Ferrer in the fourth and final games of the match.
