Federal Ratings for Nursing Homes

According to a recent analysis of the government’s first ranking of nearly 16,000 nursing homes, for-profit nursing homes have a higher percentage of violations, compared to other nursing homes. The new rating system, released Thursday by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, assigns homes one to five stars for their quality, staffing and health inspections, plus an overall score. Homes are assigned a rating between 5 stars, or “much above average,” and 1 star, or “much below average.”

The report found twenty-seven percent of the 10,542 for-profit homes were one-star, compared with 13 percent of the 4,138 not-for-profit homes. Nineteen percent of not-for-profit facilities got five stars, compared with 9 percent of for-profits. The most common violations centered on quality of care, a category related to lack of services necessary for residents’ mental and physical well-being, improper storage and distribution of food and lack of the appropriate treatment to prevent and treat pressure sores and urinary tract infections.

Federal officials hope the new rating system for nursing homes across the country will put these facilities on the right path for improvement. The system will help people decide which home to chose. According to data from the CMS, more than 1 million Americans enter a nursing home each year. In September, a government report has revealed that more than 90% of U.S. nursing homes surveyed violated federal care standards in each of the past three years.
