Brett Lorenzo Favre set a new record for career touchdown passes after he zipped a 16-yard slant scoring pass to Greg Jennings in Green Bay Packer’s game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Gulfport, Mississippi native quarterback broke Dan Marino's record with 4:56 left in the first quarter. Favre now has 421 career touchdown passes.
After throwing the record-breaking pass, Favre sprinted to the end zone and raised Jennings on his shoulders in celebration. Then followed the hugs with teammates on the sideline, while thousands of fans were cheering ecstatically as most of them made the trip from Wisconsin and they were properly rewarded. Even the Vikings’ fans stood on their feet and applauded the feat.
"I loved holding the touchdown record for the past 13 years," Marino said. "But if someone was going to break it. I'm glad it was someone like you, who has always competed at the highest level and always played to win."
It’s probably the National Football League’s most sacred record claimed by Favre. Just two weeks ago, he broke John Elway's record for career victories by a quarterback as he led his team to a 35-13 triumph over the New York Giants.
Favre tied Marino's record as he threw three touchdown passes in the Packers' 31-24 win in San Diego last week
He also holds the mark for career completions and consecutive starts by a QB, reaching 241 Sunday. He surpassed former Vikings centre Mick Tingelhoff into second place on the list for all players. Jim Marshall holds the all-time mark with 270 consecutive starts.
Favre is the only player in NFL history who managed to win the AP MVP three time in a row (1995-97) and has led the Packers to two Super Bowls: a victory against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI and a loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.
Since his 1992 debut with the Packers, Favre has started every game during the 17 seasons in the league.
His records include most consecutive starts of a NFL quarterback with 241 and most completions (5,108). He is second to Marino for career attempts (8,353), and career passing yards (58,388). With 150 career victories, Favre is the all-time winningest QB in NFL history.
