Kia Scherr learned on Friday that her husband, Alan Scherr, and their daughter, were killed in the terror attacks in Mumbai, India. The Synchronicity Foundation, a meditation group near Charlottesville, Virginia, has posted a statement on its website saying that the two were killed at the Oberoi Hotel, one of the luxury hotels targeted by the Muslim militants.
Scherr, 58 years old, and his daughter, Naomi, 13, were nearing the end of a two-week pilgrimage to India with a group of 25 others from the Synchronicity Foundation. They were dining at the Oberoi hotel restaurant with other members of the group who were visiting India when they heard gunshots. Four other members of the spiritual community were wounded during the attacks; Charles Cannon, Synchronicity founder and spiritual leader, was not injured.
"Within two minutes, they were on us," Varagona, who witnessed the scene, told the Associated Press from her bed in a hospital in Mumbai, where she was recovering from arm and leg wounds. Bobbie Garvey, a spokesman for the Synchronicity Foundation, informed that the injured at the Synchronicity center were Helen Connolly of Toronto, Rudrani Devi and Linda Ragsdale of Nashville, both of whom underwent surgery for their bullet wounds and Michael Rudder of Montreal, who was in intensive care after he suffered three bullet wounds. The terrorists simultaneously attacked several hotels, restaurants, a train station and tourist sites in Mumbai.
The Web page for condolences filled Friday; Alan and his family were remembered as "dear souls" and integral members of the community. "Alan and his wife Kia have been integral members of the Synchronicity community for more than a decade since moving to Faber with their young daughter Naomi," an announcement on the group's Web site said.
Mr. Scherr, the founder's paid spokesman, a prolific writer and astrologer, had practiced meditation for most of his adult life.
