Fatah Says Abbas Wasn't Advised to Shun Peace Conference

A Fatah official said Saturday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has not been advised to shun the upcoming international peace summit organized by the United States, like Israeli media suggested.

Fatah spokesman Ahmed Abdel Rahman accused Israel of trying to blame the Palestinian side for a possible failure of the negotiations and tries to postpone the November conference.

“We did not put any pressure on President Abbas or asked him to put conditions on his participation in the conference,” he told Palestinian media.

“The Israeli press reports are meant to foil the conference in order to blame the Palestinians of the failure.”

Israeli media said the Palestinian organization urged Abbas to impose several conditions during his discussions with Premier Ehud Olmert and dodge the upcoming conference if Olmert doesn’t accept an agreement tackling core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abdel Rahman said Fatah made the necessary steps towards reconciliation with Hamas and Israel after it received the support of the international community.

His affirmation was anchored by Qadura Fares, a member of the Legislative Council who said discussions will be held with Hamas representatives after the international peace conference.

“I believe the dialogue with the two movements is a certain choice but I think it will be delayed until after the conference in the fall,” said Qadura Fares, who is a member of the central committee of Fatah faction.

The meeting was announced by US President George W Bush in July after Hamas came to power in Gaza following fierce clashes between its military wing and members of Fatah’s security force in mid-June.

After Fatah was ousted from Gaza, Abbas decided to form a new administration in the West Bank comprising only members of his movement and kicked off negotiations with Israel.

Fares said Fatah will seek reconciliation on a new level with Hamas if the November summit fails to provide a breakthrough. Otherwise, “Hamas has to revise itself and be more realistic in dealing with the political development.”

Meanwhile, a Palestinian official said Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad will meet with President Bush next week in New York, before the United Nations General Assembly meetings.
