Ex-actor and fashion critic Richard Selzer, better known as Mr. Blackwell, recently passed away because of complications from an intestinal infection, according to published reports.
Mr. Blackwell had been in poor health over the past years and in August media reports announced he was in coma after a fall that occurred while staying in Los Angeles.
As stated by his publicist Harlan Boll, Selzer, who previous to entering the glamorous fashion industry had been a Hollywood actor, breathed his last on Sunday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of complications related to an intestinal infection. He was 86.
For almost half a century, Mr. Blackwell criticized Hollywood’s fashion disasters in his list of worst-dressed celebrities. Music icons, TV show hosts, actors and actresses – each year, they all expected the fashion critic’ annual international list.
Some of the A-stars who were condemned in the Worst Dressed List for their bad fashion sense or for their garments-related choices include: Bjork (who “dances in the dark - and dresses there, too"), Sharon Stone (who looked like "an over-the-hill Cruella DeVille") and Mary Kate ("A tattered toothpick trapped in a hurricane"). Also, he once said about controversial singer Amy Winehouse that “she's part 50's car-hop horror.”
As an actor, Blackwell hadn’t enjoyed a great success. This is why he decided to choose a new career and started designing attires for movie stars and musicians in 1949. But he
found his glamorous style out of favor in the 1960's as mini-skirts
and jeans became fashionable. Blackwell closed his fashion business in
the mid-1970s but kept on collating his lists and his fashion barbs to
the end.
