Farewell to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who died of leukemia at her home in Bel Air on December the 18th at age 76, was laid to rest today at Los Angeles' Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills cemetery. More than 250 family members, friends and trekkies from across the "Star Trek'' universe gathered to bid farewell to the voice of the starship Enterprise, including costars Walter Koenig (Chekov), Nichelle Nichols (Uhuru) and George Takei (Sulu).

As widow of the late ‘Star Trek’ creator Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett was the greatest force in keeping the spirit of ‘Star Trek’ alive. Under her guidance, her late husband’s idea for the series ‘Andromeda’ became reality as a multiyear syndicated show after his death. Majel also performed in an episode of ‘Babylon 5.’

However, the actress is best known for her roles in ‘Star Trek’, after getting on-board as Capt. Christopher Pike’s Number One in the original plot. Later, she became the voice of the Enterprise computer in virtually every television and movie incarnation of the series as well as playing nurse Christine Chapel. Recently, she voiced the ship's computer in the latest ‘Star Trek’ film, which is to be released on May the 8th.

Her death is a huge loss for friends, family and fans. Nevertheless, what Majel Barrett Roddenberry has left behind should continue to live on until the 23rd century, the time the original series was set in. Her funeral today was opened to fans of the TV show by her survivors.
