Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” young adult books,
has been left with such a bitter taste after the leak of her yet-unfinished
fifth installment of the series on the Internet that she has decided to take a
hiatus from writing – indefinitely.
Stephenie Meyer’s disappointment trickles out of her words
as she writes on her website that the manuscript has been leaked, incomplete, uncorrected,
full of flaws, before becoming ripe for publishing and reading.
While she calls it a violation of her rights as an author
but also as a human being, and expresses her discontent with terms such as
“sad” and “upsetting experience,” the bitter taste she feels does not translate
into bitterness towards the person who may have caused the leak, apparently
inadvertently.
“The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the
Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose,” the 34-year-old
author wrote. “I have no comment beyond that, as I believe that there was no
malicious intent with the initial distribution.”
It must take a lot for an artist to have their work pretty
much stolen from them and still be able to say they understand the incident.
There is more to the story though, as Meyer concludes her
posting by announcing fans that she has been left “too sad about what has
happened” to continue working on the book and “so it is on hold indefinitely.”
The fifth and final installment in the series, which started
off with “Twilight” and continued with “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn,”
was “Midnight Sun.”
The series tells the story of the beautiful adolescent girl
Bella and her equally beautiful vampire lover Edward. “Midnight Sun” told their
love story from Edward’s perspective.
While fans will have to wait an unknown period of time to
see the finished product – if they ever will – Stephenie Meyer has offered a
consolation, sort of, by posting the draft on her own website, for all to see.
With her permission.
