Finally, we get our own G.E.C.K.! Even if I’m not so sure
that a fully-fledged citizen of Arroyo questing for the Garden of Eden Creation Kit
would be so happy to find out it’s a mod tool /level editor for Fallout 3 and
not a hi-tech installation able to revitalize irradiated farmlands. Oh
well.(Gotta be careful with these Fallout 2 references, or people might think
I’m, you know, old).
As promised by Fallout 3 crafters Bethesda, the
G.E.C.K will put the inner workings of Fallout 3 in your quivering, VATS assisted
hands. You can make your own characters,
your own towns and buildings to put them in and your own dungeons to kill them
in. You can also hand them scripts with what they should say to you and you can
create your own weapons to test on the monstrous abominations you’re free to
create.
All in all, there seems to be
enough level of customizable detail to satisfy the needs of the game creator
dilettante. In case you’re worried precisely because of this high level of detail and technical
arcana, Bethesda has kindly provided its disciples with a G.E.C.K wiki page
(from where you can download the editor, for free), which is actually a
community-run site.
And now for the bad news which many of you are probable
aware of or at least guessing at. If you’ve got your Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360
or PS3, then you can’t use the G.E.C.K. Apparently, some things just can’t be
ported.
This level editing tools package is the vanguard of an
entire shipment of content for the game. According to GameSpot, 2009 will not get
too old before Bethesda
will provide gamers with three downloadable add-ons packed with new quests and
epic intricacies. But before that, there will surely be plenty of gamer
generated content shared out on the Internet, thanks to the G.E.C.K.
