Fake Holocaust Memoir Pulled By Publisher Amid Dispute

Writer Herman Rosenblat's book titled "Angel at the Fence," which Oprah Winfrey called "the single greatest love story," she ever encountered on the show, was canceled by publisher Berkley Books after Rosenblat told his agent that the book was partly invented.

The book, which was supposed to come out in February, had many fooled with the incredible, hope-filled love story between Rosenblat who claimed he met his wife, Roma Radzicky, while a prisoner at a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp, where she allegedly sneaked him apples and bread. Twelve years after the war ended, Rosenblat claimed a mutual friend set them up on a blind date. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.

Berkley Books announced on Saturday that the publishing of the book was called off after receiving new information from Rosenblat's agent, Andrea Hurst. The author was asked to return all money he received for this work.

The decision came after Holocaust scholars questioned the tale's authenticity while Rosenblat's friends and family voiced skepticism in a recent issue of the New Republic. One of his brothers reportedly stopped speaking to him over it.

In a statement issued Saturday through his agent, 79-year-old Rosenblat, who according to historical records is indeed a Holocaust survivor, described himself as an advocate of love and tolerance who falsified his past to better spread his message.

"Angel at the Fence," had also been made into a children’s book already released this fall and a movie scheduled for release in March. Harris Salomon, who is producing the movie said he would go ahead with the film, but as a work of fiction, adding that Rosenblat had agreed to donate all earnings from the film to Holocaust survivor charities.
