Facebook has just revealed a major redesign of its social
networking site, having reorganized and simplified many of its features.
The site’s new interface is much cleaner and the users will
now have more control over their profiles.
The new version is currently in limited use, but company
officials said the new Facebook will gradually be available to the site’s more
than 70 million users in the following days. Facebook advised its users to not
be disappointed if they did not immediately see the changes, but come back in
the next few days and check out the new features.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement
that the recent changes were supposed to give users “even more control and
ownership over their profiles and simplify the user experience.”
Some of the applications that have been until now shown on
the left-hand bar, such as links to photos, groups or events, will be moved to
the right-hand bar, where the notifications and friend’s status updates are placed
as well.
An important change will be the addition of tabs, which will
make it simpler to access a friend’s wall, personal information, photos and
applications. Instead of being spread around on the user’s profile, these
features will, from now on, be accessed easily, by using tabs located at the
top of the page. More tabs may be added for certain applications, if the user
wishes.
The new design does not affect Facebook’s privacy policy,
company officials said. Users are still able to “choose what information they
put in their profile, including contact and personal information, pictures,
interests and groups they join.”
The most popular social networking site recently sued the
German site StudiVZ, claiming that it was an illegal clone of Facebook. StudiVZ
said it had not received any legal complaint from Facebook and denied to have
illegally copied the more famous site’s design.
