The Facebook “massacre” has stopped after the company decided to kill the Burger King’s application, called Whopper Sacrifice.Last week, as part of a marketing campaign to promote its Angry Whopper, Burger King offered a free whopper to all Facebook users who were ready to delete ten friends from their profile.
The Angry Whopper is a whopper, augmented with all kinds of goodies, like spicy crispy onions, jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise, and spicy "Angry Sauce".
Therefore more than 233,906 friends were removed last week by 82,771 people who decided to take part in this promotion. The fun fact is that the Whopper Sacrifice was sending messages to the deleted friends, notifying them about “the sacrifice”.
However, Facebook decided to block the Whopper Sacrifice app, in order to preserve the users’ privacy. Judging by the comments posted on Whopper Sacrifice page from Facebook it seems like there were some users caught by surprise. They deleted 10 friends, but failed to submit for the free coupon.
Burger King released a statement, saying that the restrictions placed by Facebook regarding the notifications sent by Whopper Sacrifice would result in a different approach to their application. As a result they decided to conclude the campaign.
Whopper Sacrifice was created by Burger King's ad agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky of Miami.
