There are many rumors going around about Facebook’s intentions to also jump into the digital music business, just as MySpace did last month.
The New York Post was the first to present these plans, stating that Facebook is currently considering several possible partnerships that will complete its music service. Allegedly, the company is not interested in building its own service and is looking for an outside partner that already owns all the licenses needed and also the technology to begin this project as soon as possible.
The Post layed out the four possible Facebook Music partners: Rhapsody, LaLa, Imeem and iLike. Each of them offer certain interesting and appealing features and for now it is too soon to make predictions.
Facebook’s officials refused to address the issue for the Post, stating only that music is one of the elements of the company’s mission and also that they are always talking with potential partners. Before making any other comments, people should wait for an official statement si more details about the company’s plans.
At this point nothing is certain, as there are still many aspects that need to be taken into consideration. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if Facebook decides to walk away from the project and focus its efforts on other activities.
"Facebook is a serious challenger to MySpace and they would certainly want to do anything that record labels would allow them to do with advertising-supported music," said Phil Leigh, senior analyst at Inside Digital Media, as quoted by NewsFactor. He aslo added that the significant advertising-supported revenue would be a great gain for Facebook.
