After the Terms of Service-related scandal involving Facebook, the free-access social networking website is trying to use a democratic approach to solve the problem and decided to leave its TOS in the hands of the site’s users.
Facebook launched a campaign polling users over its TOS. The move was cheered by advocates and is seen as a revolutionary measure that will make the social network a democratic one. Considering the fact that Facebook, which has more than 175 million users worldwide, could form the sixth-largest country on the planet, it is of paramount importance whether it’s ruled through democracy or dictatorship.
Facebook faced a considerable amount of pressure last week when tens of thousands joined online protests against its TOS policy which in short made Facebook the sole owner of all the contend posted by users on the site.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in an effort to save face, assured users that the content posted on the social network site belongs only to them and they must not worry that it will fell in the wrong hands. Now the company extended the campaign by giving users the right to vote on issues like privacy, ownership and sharing on Facebook.
"I believe these steps are unprecedented in promoting understanding and enabling participation on the Web," said Mr. Zuckerberg in a company blog post.
The first documents put on the table for debate are Facebook's Guiding Principles and its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. Over the next 30 days, users will comment the controversial issues and discuss each document on forums. After reviewing feedback, Facebook will incorporate changes in the republished versions of the two policies.
Vote on the Facebook Guiding Principles and the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities has begun on February 25.
