Facebook networking has recently banned and erased all photos representing mothers who breast feed their babies, from the famous Web site. Nursing and breastfeeding represents a way to feed infants and it’s also a natural part of being a mother, but the networking considers this to be vulgar.
Yet, their action wasn’t left unpunished as many activists gathered round in front of Facebook's Palo Alto headquarters in order to make protests connected to this censorship.
They sang songs and held signs as to show their disagreement toward the Website’s decision. One of the songs addressed to the Facebook’s leaders said that even if they go and take out their photos, they will never learn the fact that their breasts aren’t porn.
But the Website clearly stated that they had no problems with breastfeeding and that they only try to keep away images of fully exposed breasts. But the activists think that the images aren’t obscene and shouldn’t be taken off the Website, even if Facebook’s decision won’t be discussed nor changed.
Barry Schintt, spokesperson for Facebook, stated that the pictures which show a nipple or areola are considered to be vulgar and violate the policy of the site. This way, any kind of photo which presents such images has to be removed.
Heather Farley, one of the mothers blamed for posting such pictures, stated that she had put a photo of hers while breastfeeding her infant around Halloween, but the picture was removed in November. In addition, Farley was warned that she would have her account erased if another photo of this kind would have to be removed again.
“Hey Facebook breastfeeding is not obscene” was the group created on the website which had also released a petition under the group named Mothers International Lactation Campaign.
