Facebook introduced its new feature called Facebook Connect,
which allows users to access other Web sites with their identification details
from the social networking page and also view their friends’ activities.
Through Connect, users will be able to broadcast all their actions to all their
friends using the Web sites that agreed to the partnership.
Over the next few weeks, Web sites such as the online video
hub Hulu, the Discovery Channel, the social news site Digg, the San Francisco
Chronicle will introduce the new service on their pages.
“Everyone is looking for ways to make their Web sites more
social,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer. “They can
build their own social capabilities, but what will be more useful for them is
building on top of a social system that people are already wedded to,” she
added.
Facebook is not the only one considering the potential of
such a move, as MySpace, Yahoo and Google have announced that similar services
are currently being developed.
“There is a lot of interest in investing in us and we are
always open to the right financing at the right price,” explained Ms. Sandberg,
with the company constantly looking for new partners and new ways of cashing in
on its massive worldwide success. The network registers at this point more than
120 million members and stands out as the biggest and most attractive place for
social networking. As expected, the company is looking to turn its popularity
into profit, by teaming up with different companies and experimenting with new
services.
