Facebook Does Not Approve Of Breast-Feeding On Its Pages

Facebook’s decision to ban its users’ photos presenting them breast-feeding managed to irritate many social networkers.

Barry Schnitt, one of the Web site’s spokesmen, explained that in their point of view, this is not a matter of obscenity, but rather one of safety. He continued by saying that many teenagers use the popular network and they must not be exposed to images that could inspire their basic instincts.

He also added that "Photos containing a fully exposed breast (as defined by showing the nipple or areola) do violate those terms (on obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit material) and may be removed," and concluded: "The photos we act upon are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other users who complain."

The measure immediately led to the first event of the group Mothers International Lactation Campaign (MILC), which managed to bring together more than 11,000 people to take part in the group’s first virtual protest. MILC is a group that fights for mothers’ rights to breastfeed in public, but as mentioned above, it does get involved with other issues too.

Facebook user Heather Farley was one of the people extremely disturbed by the ban. She joined a group called "Hey Facebook breastfeeding is not obscene," and organized a protest last weekend at the company’s Palo Alto headquarters.

"I don't want future moms to feel that breast-feeding is shameful," Farley stated in an interview with San Jose Mercury News. "It might keep them from breast-feeding."

The matter can be turned on many sides, as people see these things in their own way using their different sets of values and beliefs.
