Face-Off: Lancôme Sues Uma Thurman

Looks like Uma Thurman may spend yet more time in courtrooms. In an ironic twist, French cosmetics giant Lancôme has sued the actress over the use of her name and face in advertising campaigns.

Uma Thurman could sue Lancôme for $1 million so Lancôme is suing Thurman first.

That’s about the gist of it.

Thurman claims that her old Lancôme ads are being used by the French company on Asian websites and a Canadian billboard without her permission, her contract with Lancôme having expired, reports the New York Daily News.

Lancôme however denies such an accusation, stating it has not violated the contract and that she is therefore not entitled to the compensation she is seeking. The company claims the photographs were no longer meant to be publicly available and that they were used unbeknownst to Lancôme.

The company filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court, saying it never “knowingly or intentionally” used Thurman’s image, reports the Daily News, and that the web pages were “inadvertently archived” and never meant to be publicly available.

“[Lancôme] pulled the pages off as soon as they found out about them,” Peter Raymond, a lawyer for Lancôme, is quoted as saying. “They didn’t even know they were there.” Raymond added that Lancôme “couldn’t control everybody out in the world.”

Lancôme previously attempted a settlement but a satisfactory arrangement could not be reached between the two parties.

The 38-year-old Academy Award-nominated actress became spokesperson for Lancôme in 2000; the contract, worth $5.8 million for the first two years of the deal and $3.1 million for each additional year, if exercised, reports the Daily News. The contract expired in 2005.

“I’m delighted that the case will go before a jury,” Thurman’s lawyer, Bertram Fields, said. “They got an enormous benefit throughout the world after the contract was over, and $1 million doesn’t begin to do it.”

It was only a few days ago that the “Kill Bill” actress found peace over another court matter. Jack Jordan, 37, accused of harassing and stalking her, was convicted and faces up to one year in jail.
