Fables is an ongoing comic book series, created by Bill Willingham in 2002, and it deals with various characters form fairy tales. The characters refer to themselves as “fables” and cannot interact with humans. Willingham’s characters live in upstate New York in a place they call “The Farm.”
The comic book series are not in any way connected to the larger DC Comics universe, as they represent different styles and any connection between them would have been awkward. The “Fables” have been forced out from their native lands by a mysterious enemy which the characters call “the Adversary.” Willingham gives a very interesting and funny twist on very famous fairy tales characters like Snow White or Prince Charming.
Recently, ABC announced that a television series portraying the universe created by Willingham will be shown on TV. ABC will show a pilot episode of Fables and according to how the public will react to it, the project will be continued or not. The script for the series will be written by Raven Metzner and Stu Zichermann.
The show will be directed by David Semel, who directed “Heroes” and “Life.” This is not the first time “Fables” is attempted to be put on the TV screens, as another try was made during NBC’s 2006-2007 season. Unfortunately, the project never made it.
All in all, “Fables” is an interesting story that deserves to be on TV, as it has all the ingredients to be a success: it’s incredibly entertaining, it’s funny and the characters are very well designed.
