The FDA has issued an alert after finding that undeclared drugs in seventy diet products could really be dangerous. Unsuspecting consumers who only want to lose weight might actually wind up with something containing Phenetoin, an anti-seizure drug with side effects that include blurred vision and bleeding gums.
There are some other drugs found in diet pills, such as Sibutramine, a controlled substance, and Rimonabant, pulled from European shelves and not approved in the US. Experts advise consumers who want to lose weight that they should be careful and look for the cleanest, most natural products they can.
Some of the products even suggest taking three times the recommended daily dosage, which could lead to increased blood pressure or even seizures. Doctors once again say that keeping your body moving is the key to a successful weight loss program. That combined with eating less than you're burning off. Of course, it's always better to talk to your doctor before taking any diet pill or supplement.
Almost 70 products now make up FDA's warning about weight loss pills containing undeclared pharma ingredients. At first, the agency only targeted 28 products for adulteration with such compounds as Sibutramine, Rimonabant and Phenetoin. The full list of products is available on the FDA Web site. A FDA director told the media that the investigation is ongoing and that there is definitely the possibility that there could be criminal charges.
An interesting fact shows that a large majority of the pills, but not all of them, are made in China. Some consumers often buy this type of product on the Internet or at a retail store, and most of the times it appears to good to be true, so it's probably too good to be true. It remains to be seen if the FDA will ban these pills and convict the ones who made them.
