The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued an alert warning Americans not to consume any products with milk ingredients imported from China because of concern about such products being contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine.
In fact, the agency said it will impound all food products with milk from China if they are found to contain melamine. The announcement comes two months after a raft of Chinese dairy products were found to contain melamine. More than 50,000 infants in China got sick in September and other 4 died after being fed on infant formula.
Since September, other products other than milk have been found to contain melamine such as eggs, instant coffee, tea products, biscuits, cereals, snack foods, ice cream, cheese, soft drinks and fish foods.
“We've continued to get information from others in the international community, and reports from China, about (melamine contamination) moving into different commodities. We’re taking this action because it’s the right thing to do for the public health,” said Dr. Steven Solomon, a deputy associate F.D.A. commissioner.
Following the alert, Chinese products that contain milk or milk powder will automatically be detained at the border until the manufacturer or its customer has the product tested and it is found to be free of contamination, or they show documentation indicating that the product does not contain milk of milk-derived ingredients.
Also the FDA is planning to open some new offices in China to check products intended for the US market.
Melamine is a chemical used to make plastic and fertilizers. It is not allowed in human or pet food. If ingested, melamine can lead to the formation of kidney stones and crystals and related complications, the FDA wrote in the alert.
