The FBI continues its investigation on extremist animal rights protester, after a University of California researcher and his family became the victims of a firebomb attack at their home in Santa Cruz. The FBI agents went to a home on Riverside Avenue, Santa Cruz for the second time since similar attacks started earlier this year.
The journalists were given no details on the purpose of the search or the owners of the house, and it still remains unclear whether the investigators have a possible suspect or suspects. Until the person responsible for the attacks gets caught, the FBI said other attacks are not excluded.
David Feldheim and his family (wife and two children, aged 2 and 4), managed to escape through the fire escape from the second floor of their house, after a firebomb ignited the front porch.
The residents of the searched house came to the attention of law enforcement officers after several animal rights activists began a violent protest at the residence of a UC researcher. At least a part of the protesters were believed to be USCS students, but no arrests were made.
The attackers seems to have established a list of targets, which contains not only UC animal researchers, but also people not involved in the field, which makes the investigation even more difficult.
According to police reports, a pamphlet including a list of 13 names and countless threats towards them was found in a coffee-shop downtown Santa Cruz.
An FBI spokesperson confirmed that authorities are on high alert in case similar incidents will take place. According to them, until the attackers get caught, they fear other such incidents could happen again.
Investigators are offering a $50,000 reward for any information regarding the incidents that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the attacks. This is considered the largest such incident in the history of Santa Cruz.
