A house in Utah and three storage units were searched by FBI
which are probably connected to the man sickened by the toxin ricin found in
his motel room, but they haven’t disclosed what they’ve found.
Even though authorities believed they removed all the ricin
found in vials in the motel room in the Las Vegas Strip motel last week where
Roger Von Bergendorff, 57, had stayed, they wanted to search his home as well
in Riverton, where he lived.
On Sunday the houses located nearby were evacuated as FBI
agents dressed in hazardous-material protection suits, carefully searched the
home outside Salt Lake City
belonging to Thomas Tholen, Von Bergendorff's cousin.
No results were disclosed at a press conference, but FBI
Special Agent Timothy Fuhrman repeated what it has been said for days: “There
is no indication of any terrorist act or activity,” the Associated Press reports.
According to Tammy Ewell, who lives across the street, Bergendorff
lived in the house for more than a year before moving to Las Vegas, a year ago.
Von Bergendorff stayed in the room where ricin was found
last Thursday at an Extended Stay America
hotel one mile west of the Las Vegas Strip.
The man was hospitalized on Feb. 14 with respiratory
distress but nobody knew that he was exposed to ricin so the health district
and police were not notified.
He has been unconscious so FBI wasn’t able to question him.
It’s still unclear whether Von Bergendorff's respiratory
distress is due to the ricin exposure.
Ricin is obtained from castor beans that are processed.
Castor beans were found by police officers in the room and
powder in a small vial. Almost 500 micrograms of ricin can be deadly for an
adult.
Ricin is not illegal to be owned, but it is illegal to
processed it and use it in order to poison someone.
According to Las
Vegas police, firearms and an "anarchist-type
textbook" were also found in the room. The book was marked at a spot where
there was information about ricin.
Fuhrman said that the investigators don’t know yet why Von
Bergendorff would have ricin.
