Hyderabad, the capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was rocked Saturday by a series of explosions that killed at least 30 people and injured dozens more, authorities informed.
The first blast ripped through a park where hundreds of people were watching a laser show in the afternoon. The offices of high-ranked officials are located in the vicinity of the park, the local police informed.
A second explosion occurred shortly after this incident, the target being another crowded venue across town. About 24 people died at a popular buffet, while six others lost their lives in the first blast.
At least 35 persons were injured, some of them being transported to the local hospital with serious injuries, authorities fearing the death toll could rise.
Images aired by televisions showed terrifying images of people laying on the ground with clothes torn off and soaked in blood, as emergency teams scrambled to assist the wounded.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosions were terrorist acts, but policemen couldn’t reveal the types of explosives used or quantity. After these incidents, panic gripped the metropolis, people being asked to avoid crowded venues or stay indoors.
The attacks come just a few hours before thousands of weddings and the adequate celebrations are scheduled to take place in Hyderabad. Security forces set up checkpoints at the main exit points and thoroughly rummaged every vehicle that was entering or leaving the city.
Earlier this year, Hyderabad was the site of another bloody bomb attack. On May 18, an explosive device went off near the central Mecca mosque killing 14 people.
