Several security experts have come forward challenging Georgian allegations that the cyber attacks against their government's websites are a form of cyberwarfare and are ordered by Russia. It appears that, although politically motivated, the attacks are the work of hackers, being similar with previous such events in the past years.
Gadi Evron, founder of the Zero Day Emergency Response Team, has written an article which points out that if Russia has come to the point of attacking physically Georgia, they do not have much use for a cyber attack as they could disable the network infrastructure with direct armed attacks. Gadi Evron says that it is his expert opinion that the DDoS hits are just some unaffiliated attacks by Russian hackers and/or some rioting by enthusiastic Russian supporters.
Gadi Evron also said that sustained DDoS attacks are affecting the performance of the Internet as a whole and the security community may soon have to get involved to stop them.
The situation highlights Georgia's lack of preparedness in terms of IT security, which goes hand in hand to its lack of preparedness for dealing with a military superpower such as Russia. Once again, Georgia's actions, beyond right and wrong, are undeniably foolish. Challenging a country with 30 times your population and probably 100 times your military power is, no matter how right you are, just plain dumb.
