Drew Peterson, an ex-police sergeant in suburban Chicago who is the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance, is reportedly engaged to be married. The 54-year-old ex-cop is at his fifth engagement although he is still legally married to his fourth wife who is still missing.
Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing in October 2007. The ex-cop proposed to his possibly fifth wife within last week. They began dating about four months ago and she is the same age Peterson’s missing wife was when she disappeared.
When asked about his new fiancée, Peterson refused to comment. He only expressed his disappointment that the media found out about it. He also added that reporters won’t be invited to his upcoming wedding.
"You try to keep a personal life," the former Bolingbrook police sergeant said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.
Peterson’s third wife, Kathleen Savio, was found dead in a bathtub. The case was reclassified as a homicide. The ex-cop hasn’t been charged in either case. His attorney, Joel Brodsky, confirmed that his client is engaged. Peterson claims his fourth wife, Stacy, left him for another man.
"We're just playing into his publicity stunt," said Pam Bosco, spokeswoman for Stacy's family.
"We know nothing about this woman, we don't know if she exists. ... If it was from something very private and special, it would have been kept that way," she added.
After a year had past since Stacy had gone missing, Peterson met with an attorney to discuss filling divorce on grounds of abandonment.
However, he is still legally married to Stacy.
Peterson is considered the prime suspect in the case of his missing wife and authorities are treating the case as a possible homicide.
