Ex British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is in stable condition after being admitted to a London hospital for tests last night.
“Her condition is stable and she is speaking to the medical staff who are caring for her. She’s had the tests but we won’t be releasing any more information until we’ve spoken to her private secretary, a spokeswoman for London’s St. Thomas’s Hospital told Reuters Saturday morning.
The 82-year-old Thatcher was taken to the south hospital on Friday for precautionary medical tests.
Thatcher, nicknamed “the Iron Lady” was elected head of the Conservative Party in 1975. She was Britain’s first female prime minister from May 1979 until her resignation in November 1990, also being the first leader to win three elections in a row. During her premiership, Thatcher forced through sweeping changes, advocating individualism and the breakdown of Britain’s class system.
She was a dominant figure in British politics in the 1980s and a firm supporter of President Ronald Reagan, her ideological colleague. In a prerecorded video at Reagan’s 2004 funeral, a frail Thatcher said he was “a great president, a great American and a great man. And I have lost a dear Friend.”
Thatcher cut back her workload in March 2002 after doctors said she had suffered a series of strokes. She was given a clean bill of health by doctors in December 2005 after she spent a night in the hospital. She then complained of feeling faint during an appointment with a hairdresser. Thatcher has appeared at private functions frequently in recent years but makes few public statement.
Lady Thatcher lives in Belgravia, central London. Her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher, died in June 2003, aged 88.
