Picking a name for your baby is not an easy task, especially if you’re a celebrity, which is probably why it took Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck over a week to come up with the name for their second daughter: Seraphina Rose Elisabeth Affleck.
Child naming for actors and musicians is especially challenging since it is also a way of expression, a chance to show the world just how creative, and culturally relevant they can get but it can also be a great opportunity to saddle a defenseless child with a moniker that mocks them more than any schoolyard bully could be bothered to do. Plenty of examples for both categories.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes named their first child together Suri, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie called their first biological daughter Shiloh, while their famous twins got slightly more earthly names, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline.
Singer Ashlee Simpson and her husband Pete Wentz picked a rather crazy name for their baby boy, Bronx Mowgli, while Gwen Stefani named her boys Kingston and Zuma Nesta Rock. Gwyneth Paltrow chose Apple and Moses for her children and David Duchovny named his kid Kyd. Demi Moore and Bruce Willis named their girls Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden called their little bundle of joy Harlow Winter.
Confirming the news on Tuesday, Affleck’s spokesperson refused to provide any additional details regarding the name such as why or whom was the baby named after. According to “Baby Name Bible” author Pamela Redmond Satran, it appears that the Afflecks got their inspiration from heaven.
“Seraphina is an elaborately feminine kind of name that's really come into style over the past few years, like [Affleck's friend Matt Damon's daughter] Isabella,” Satran told Usmagazine.com.
She went on telling the mag that a Seraphim is “one of the highest orders of angels,” following from Angelina, which has gotten super popular because of Angelina Jolie, “as a spiritual, heavenly name.”
Speaking before the birth, Affleck insisted he and Garner would opt for a "traditional name" for their second child.
"The 'ph' spelling of Seraphina is more Hebrew in origin. It means 'ardent,' which is passionate," explained Satran, adding that Jennifer Garner’s 3 year-old daughter Violet has also become an inspiration to many unimaginative couples.
“Ben and Jen really put Violet on the map,” Satran noted. “They transformed it from what people saw as a dowdy, old lady name to a really cute, modern choice."
The former “Alias” star added another member to her perfect family last Tuesday in Los Angeles. She and Affleck, both 36, began dating in 2004 after meeting on the set of “Daredevil.” They tied the knot in June 2005 and by December, Garner gave birth to daughter Violet.
