Despite the global economic turmoil the world is facing
right now, Europe is determined to continue its space adventure. During the ESA
Council meeting at ministerial level held in Prague this week, representatives
of 18 member states agreed to continue ongoing programs and support new
initiatives in space.
The ministers adopted four resolutions, one on the role of
space in delivering Europe’s global objectives, another one on the level of
resources for the European Space Agency to cater for Space Science programs and
activities for the next four years, a third one on the renewal of the
contribution of ESA member states to the running costs of the Guiana Space Centre,
and a fourth on the future evolution of the agency in terms of financial management
reform, decision-making processes, industrial and procurement policies, and the
further development of the site infrastructures for ESA programs.
According to the Agency, the decisions made during the council
reflect Europe’s determination to invest in space, providing opportunities for
innovation, economic growth, strategic independence and preparation for the
future.
“Space is an enabling tool which gives European
decision-makers the ability to respond to critical challenges such as global
climate change and global security,” the Agency said.
The decisions made by the council include the future of the
Guiana Space Centre in South America, but also the future of programs such as the
Meteosat 3rd generation development program or robotic exploration programs
such as the ExoMars, the future of human spaceflight, microgravity and human
exploration programs and more.
