Popular magazine Esquire is celebrating its 75th
anniversary in a very special way, offering its clients a glimpse of what
future newspapers might look like. The cover of the October issue will include
a 10-inch screen, developed by E Ink, a company that produces electronic paper
displays. The screen will flash these words: The 21st Century Begins
Now. The initiative managed to boost the prices of the magazine’s advertising pages
and if it will help sell out the stocks, we might just see more and more of these
campaigns.
"This is an indication of what will happen and become
more prevalent over the coming years," Esquire Editor David Granger said
of electronic paper displays. "I hope to find other compelling ways to use
digital technology to improve print." He also talked about the possibility
for future magazines to include some E Ink pages, which could be updated
through Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. Still, these sort of projects are in
their very early drawing-board phase and there are still many development details
that demand attention.
The screen is filled with Electronic Ink, made out of microcapsules
embedded with white and black pigments. These capsules respond to electric
charges, allowing the formation of images and texts, easily viewable during the
day.
The technology already found its first market segment, with
the Amazon’s Kindle electronic book and Sony's Reader Digital Book.
The company plans to print 100,000 copies of its new October
issue and the announced price is $5.99, which is $2 more than the standard
$3.99. There will also be available a version without the e-paper cover which
will sell for $4.99.
