At a home for disabled clients in Cheshire, residents were sent to the hospital to be checked out after eating part of a cake filled with prescription pills.
The cake was brought to the home on Creamery Road on Saturday, according to reports by state police. When the residents were eating the cake on Sunday, one of the house’s employees noticed small pills in the cake. A thorough search revealed more on the bottom of the cake.
State police and emergency medical services were brought to the scene and residents who’d eaten the cake were taken to St. Mary's and Bradley Memorial Hospital and placed under observation. No-one got sick in the end, either at the home or at the hospital and the residents are doing fine.
After investigators interviewed employees at the scene, they identified the one who’d baked the cake and brought it to the home. They then determined that she’s accidentally spilled her prescription pills in the kitchen. While she thought she’d accounted for all the pills, some of them apparently wound up in the cake batter. The pills were confirmed to be a genetic antihistamine
The home is administered by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and they have put the employee, whose name was not released, on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
State police will carry on with the investigation to determine if any criminal charges are going to be filed in the case. This however seems unlikely unless the department finds that the incident was anything “other than accidental.”
