Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the Fox drama “24,” was
sentenced on Wednesday to 48 days in jail after his second drunken-driving
arrest in three years and he immediately reported Glendale City Jail to start
doing his time.
Sutherland pleaded no contest in October to driving with a
blood-alcohol level about the legal limit of 0.08 after he was arrested in
September while being on probation for a previous DUI offence.
Sutherland’s jail sentence consists in 30 days for driving while
under alcohol influence and 18 days for violating his probation from a previous
DUI case, according to City Attorney representative Nick Velasquez. Moreover, he
was fined $510 and ordered more five years on probation. He also has to
complete an 18-month alcohol program plus six months of weekly therapy
sessions.
The actor was ordered to complete his sentence by March 30,
according to Assistant City Attorney Dan Jeffries, so he could have waited as
late as February 12. Instead, he chose to present himself two hours later after
he was convicted.
Sutherland’s lawyer, Blair Berk told the Associated Press
that his client had “made the decision to surrender to custody immediately.”
The Canadian actor is no stranger to driving while alcohol
influence, after being arrested in 2004 for the same reason. On September 25, the
police stopped him as he left a Hollywood
industry party at the trendy Area nightclub. He failed a sobriety test after
being pulled over for making an illegal U-turn. He pleaded no contest to a
misdemeanor DUI charge at that time too, being sentenced to five-year
probation, 50 hour of community service and ordered to attend an alcohol
treatment program.
Sutherland apologized to his family, friends and co-workers
for his behavior in a statement released immediately after his leaving the
courthouse.
"I'm very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited
recently, and I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has
caused my family, friends and co-workers," he said according to the
Associated Press.
According to earlier reports, Sutherland was expected to
serve his term with breaks in order not to interrupt the “24” filming schedule,
but FOX has already postpone its sixth season because it was not complete
before the Hollywood writer’s strike started. The network television said that
it would wait until the whole series is ready to unfold on a weekly basis. The
actor plays the role of a counter terrorist Jack Bauer, who won him an Emmy
award last year.
