Embattled Windows Home Server Receives Much Needed Patch

The embattled home server operating system from Microsoft has finally received its much needed Service Pack 1, disguised as a so-called "Power Pack 1 update". It finally fixes a data corruption issue that lingered on since day one.

The first warning on the matter was issued on Thursday, December 20, 2007, and it came as a result of several complaints from WHS users. When some programs are used inside Windows Home Server to save or edit program-specific-files, they tend to corrupt the data when saved on the WHS.

These programs are Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Microsoft Office OneNote 2007, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, Microsoft Money 2007. On the official WHS forum users have also signaled the existence of incompatibilities between the home server software and Torrent applications, Intuit Quicken, and QuickBooks program files.

Furthermore, the patch brings Windows Vista 64-bit support, shared folder backup features, and improved remote accessibility. The update will be pushed on Windows Update the next month.

Windows Homer Server is a hardware and software solution for families who have more than one computer in the house and wish to store their data and access it easily from separate accounts. During the 2-year beta-testing period, more than 100,000 engineers and developers have been involved in the Windows Homer Server project, which appears more or less botched.

The Redmond company targets a potential market of more than 50 million families out there, all in need of a central storage device where each member of the family can store pictures, personal files, movies, etc. and even back-up the content on their separate hard drives.
