Elvis Presley has remained one of
the most famous stars of the 20th century. He was called “The King of Rock ‘n’
Roll”, but he also was an actor and one of his times’ most loved sex symbols.
Presley is now a cultural icon, but although his musical career has been well
appreciated everywhere in the world, his personal life has always been
controversial.
But Elvis Presley, or simply “The
King”, will always remain in his old or younger fans’ hearts. A proof that he
has not been forgotten is represented by this year’s shows that are to take
place in Elvis’ memoriam. Anyway, The King is dead, but long live The King!
And Elvis’ fans sure know how to
enjoy it, although behind their fun there are also Elvis Presley Enterprises’
financial interests and benefits. But these days people are gathering for the
Elvis Week to praise the popular musician that Presley still represents. Elvis
Week annually attracts worldwide fans who converge on his Tennessee estate to pay tribute to the rock
'n' roll legend. This year's event, which kicks off Saturday, marks the 30th
anniversary of his death August 16, 1977.
Twenty Elvis tribute artists will
be competing for important prizes in their King’s memory. A Nashville
recording session and a contract to perform on the first-ever Elvis Cruise
(that is to set sail to the Bahamas
on August 30) are among the prizes.
Also, Sirius satellite radio will
have a week of programming, including live coverage of a candlelight vigil August
15 and Paramount
and MGM studios will release commemorative sets of early movies from the King.
Turner Classic Movie cable network will feature an Elvis movie marathon on August
16.
eBay announced that a piano that
belonged to the The King is being auctioned off online to coincide with the
30th anniversary of Elvis’s death.
“The starting price is $250,000
but we hope to sell it for somewhere around $2 million,” Symbolic Collection, the
company selling the piano on the auction website eBay, said.
Also NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt
Jr. will attend a celebration of the late singer Elvis Presley in Memphis titled Elvis Music & Movies at Graceland and he will be the host at the Elvis Week 2007.
Graceland, Memphis and the whole country and world seem
to be singing Elvis’ song these days. So, long may he live in people’s hearts
and minds!
