Today, Elvis Presley would have turned 74, if he were still alive. It has been more than 30 years since the King of Rock and Roll passed away, but every year fans continue to get their share of The King by celebrating both his birth and his death.
The Viva Las Vegas Elvis fan club will pay its tribute to the King by holding a 30-minute ceremony tonight at 6:30 in front of the Hilton, where he set so many attendance records. The event will also mark the 40 years that have passed since Elvis returned to the stage at the International (now the Hilton) on the 31st of July, 1969.
In addition, Elvis lovers are expected to celebrate his traditional birthday ceremony, his music and his legacy at 8 p.m. on Friday at Knuckleadhead’s Saloon in Kansas City. Various impersonators will play a total of 30 to 40 of the King’s songs in a range of ages and periods, from his early rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s to his later music in the 1970s. Tickets are $10 in advance.
The next day, fans are invited to attend the Sixth Annual Elvis Birthday Bash which Priscilla Presley will host on the steps of Graceland. There will also be opened for the public an exhibit for the 70th anniversary of the building.
In a few weeks time, Thane Dunn will impersonate Elvis during a show on Saturday, the 31st of January, at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre. Tickets to the show are on sale now and Dunn says about 80 per cent of them are already sold.
The impersonating artists have been handpicked for authenticity by Elvis Bash founder and organizer Dianna Busha of Weston. As a devoted fan, Busha started the bash with the idea of making it a small gathering for friends, but when she saw that more and more people joined this gathering she decided to make it public. It's grown since then, attracting people from across the region.
Elvis Presley fans still listen to his music and watch his movies, keeping his spirit alive for the generations to come.
