Sir Elton John helped Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential
campaign by holding a fundraiser Wednesday night that gathered an impressive
$2.5 million.
British musician Elton John held a memorable concert at New York’s Radio
City Music
Hall Wednesday night, in support of Hillary Clinton’s
presidential bid. The 5,000 tickets sold to fans were as cheap as $125 and
$250, and as expensive as $2,300, the limit for an individual’s contribution to
a candidate. Campaign aides said the tickets sold out quickly, reports the
Associated Press.
Hillary Clinton was joined on stage by her husband, former
President Clinton, and their daughter Chelsea. In a nod to John’s 1983 hit, Clinton said, “I’m still
standing.”
“I believe this country is worth fighting for. So we’re
taking our campaign to Pennsylvania and all
the states that haven’t voted,” the New
York senator concluded determinedly. Pennsylvania holds its
state primary election on April 22.
John, 61, had a few words for his audience as well, stating,
“I’ve always been a Hillary supporter. There is no one more qualified to lead America.”
The venerable musician added: “I’m amazed by the
misogynistic attitudes of some of the people in this country. And I say to hell
with them.... I love you Hillary, I’ll be there for you.”
The special “one night only” event was announced in
mid-March, with John promising that the concert he will hold for his “friend” Hillary
Clinton “will be one night that you won’t want to miss.”
The performance also marked John’s first public solo concert
in New York since his October 2000 performance
at Madison Square Garden.
“I’m not a politician but I believe in the work that Hillary
Clinton does,” the singer said in the campaign’s statement announcing the
special occasion. “I’m excited to support Hillary by performing at what will be
a truly memorable night.
Among the songs John performed Wednesday night were the hits
“Your Song,” “Border Song” and “Benny and the Jets.”
Hillary Clinton experienced another successful fundraiser
last October, when she celebrated her 60th birthday at New York’s Beacon
Theater, with special guests Billy Crystal and Elvis Costello and the
Wallflowers. The event brought more than $1.5 million for her presidential
effort, according to the AP.
