Two of the best entertainers in the industry, Elton John and Billy Joel, are joining forces to host a concert on Chicago’s Wrigley Field during the summer.
On July 21, 2009, the two singer-songwriters will share the stage and twin pianos while trading voices as they perform duets. Each will play a set with his own band, followed by both bands joining for a finale.
Tickets ($175, $95, $55 plus service fees) will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday through tickets.com or by calling 800-THE-CUBS. Tickets will not be sold at the Wrigley Field box office.
“Wrigley Field is to baseball what Billy Joel and Elton John are to music -- institutions that transcend time and bring inspiration to their fans around the globe," said Cubs chairman Crane Kenney. “In addition to its status as a baseball cathedral, Wrigley Field has shown its grandeur as a football gridiron, an outdoor hockey palace and a majestic concert hall that next July will host two of the all-time musical greats. The Cubs are honored to have Billy Joel and Elton John grace Wrigley Field's stage next summer.”
The show will mark the third summer concert to be staged at Wrigley Field since Jimmy Buffett performed in 2006. Sting followed with a concert in 2007.
The two rock heavies will reunite in a July 30 concert at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, the city where they opened their first “Face to Face” tour in 1994. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Additional tour dates in St. Paul, Minnesota and Nashville, Tennessee were also posted on EltonJohn.com and BillyJoel.com, respectively.
One of the most sizzling combos in music history, Elton John and Billy Joel started touring together in 1994 introducing the new concept under the “Face to Face” name. Their last tour, in 2003, brought in $51 million in revenue.
“The great thing about performing with Elton is that he is such a good piano player and that makes me have to dig deep to keep up with him, not to mention I've got the best seat in the house-only one piano away from Elton John!” Joel said during an interview.
Elton John had equally kind words to say about Joel, stating, “I love touring with Billy. I have the greatest respect for him and we're such good friends.”
