Comedian Ellen DeGeneres, one of the country’s best known entertainers, sobbed on her daytime talk show last week over Iggy, a Brussels griffon mix that she had adopted from “Mutts and Moms,” a pet adoption agency.
She soon discovered that she was the only one that loved the puppy, as her cats did not. So, she thought to give the puppy away to her hairstylist who was searching for a pet.
Soon after she gave the puppy away, the rescue organization, Mutts and Moms, came for a routine check on her house but they discovered the dog had been given away which was a breach of their agreement. Iggy was consequently taken away from the hairstylist’s house, to the sadness of her two children who had become fond of the pup.
This idea was not to the rescue agency‘s taste as the adoption agreement doesn’t allow for pets changing owners; as a result, they retrieved the dog. Almost all agencies like this one are against “re-homing” animals and additionally, have their own age restrictions when they put a pet into adoption, as USA Today reports.
The comedian broke both those rules since the hairstylist’s children are younger than 14, the minimum age when adopting this kind of dog.
DeGeneres told her audience that she was interested only in the dog having a loving family around and that she never thought that by giving Iggy away she would break the agreement.
“There are so many dogs and cats out there that need homes and they just need to end up in a good home, that is all I care about… I don't want anybody to be discouraged from this.”
This Tuesday DeGeneres came back on the subject on her show, inviting various guests involved in pet adoptions, among which the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and online pet adoption agency petfinders.com.
Ed Sayres, the president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals seemed to be on DeGeneres’ side, “in trying to provide loving homes for animals in need,” but he also said “we also understand the point of view of Mutts & Moms,” and by that he meant the rules set by any agency like that.
DeGeneres never thought that trying to act in the dog’s benefit would lead to such a big misunderstanding. She confessed the whole situation has had a big impact on her. “I have always cried since I was a little kid. I am a sensitive person, I cry. I cry at commercials, I cry at stories, I cry at anything sweet, I cry at babies,” she said. She also expressed her fear that this kind of misunderstanding will have a bad influence on pets’ adoption and in this sense she sincerely advised her audience not to be let down by this incident.
