The daytime Emmy Awards have brought Ellen DeGeneres her fourth consecutive best talk show host prize, but failed to do the same thing for her show. Instead, Ray Rachel’s cooking and lifestyle TV series won her the Emmy for best talk show.
Ellen DeGeneres used the opportunity to announce that she and her longtime partner, actress Portia de Rossi, will get married. This has become possible thanks to California’s new ruling allowing same sex marriages. DeGeneris, which is 50, said that she feels that this was done too late, but that she hoped that in the future people will consider same sex marriages normal, and will look at our period of time as one in which the right thing was finally done.
Ray Rachel was surprised that her show has won the awards. Her idea of presenting 30-minutes recipes that would be easy to cook has bolstered her show to win this year’s Emmy, stopping "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" from winning it the fourth time in a row.
Jeanne Cooper, one of the only two remaining actors from the original series of “The Young and the Restless” soap opera, got the Emmy award for the best lead actress in a drama series. She had been nominated 8 times for the award while playing Katherine Chancellor in the show that has spanned over a 35 years period, but this year’s award was the first one she won.
Another TV veteran, Regis Philbin, has received an award for lifetime achievements in his career, which goes back for about 50 years.
