“The View” co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, pregnant with her second child, will take an extended pregnancy leave starting November and will be temporarily replaced with celebrity co-hosts.
ABC daytime talk show “The View” will be one co-host short starting with November, as Elisabeth Hasselbeck goes on maternity leave on the 8th or 9th of that month.
Elisabeth, 30, and her husband of five years, New York Giants quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, 29, are already parents to Grace, 2. The new pregnancy was announced in April.
Show spokesman Karl Nilsson confirmed Saturday Hasselbeck’s upcoming extended pregnancy leave. He specified that various celebrity guests would take her place while she is gone.
The self-described conservative mother granted Pregnancy magazine an interview last month, and talked about her pregnancy.
“I had more reassurance and affirmation as to why I have felt the things I've felt for a long time,” she tells the magazine of getting pregnant. “And as a mom, now I want to make sure that the decisions I'm making and the votes that I'm casting are going to create long-term benefits for Grace and my next child and hopefully more to come after that.”
Notorious because of her on-air disagreements with former co-host Rosie O’Donnell and because of singer Barry Manilow’s rejection of her as an interviewer, on account of her conservative views, Hasselbeck told the magazine: “Being a conservative mother isn't the challenge. Being a conservative in New York City on television is the challenge.”
At the time, she also likened the on-air brawl with O’Donnell to playing softball. Her past as captain of the softball team in college allegedly helped her maintain calm during the politically-themed quarrel with Rosie.
“I almost had the same feeling in me as when I had a championship [softball] game and I was up to bat and the pressure was on. I'm very lucky that tears didn't come out ... Unfortunately when a woman cries, it's never seen as a sign of strength and never seen in a positive light.”
Hasselbeck may have kept those tears back, but words were exchanged, tempers flared and O’Donnell subsequently left the show sooner than originally planned.
Earlier in September, Barry Manilow was supposed to appear as a guest on “The View” and cancelled his visit because he did not wish to be interviewed by the conservative Hasselbeck. He said he cannot possibly “compromise” his own democratic opinions.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a former contestant on the reality show “Survivor: The Australian Outback,” married NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, recently released by the New York Giants, in 2002. The two reportedly met at Boston College.
She has on “The View” since November 2003.
