Electronic Arts (EA) recently decided to make some of its biggest titles available through Valve's digital distribution platform Steam.
"The EA titles coming to Steam this holiday include some this year's top PC titles," explained Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve, who also added that he is extremely pleased by the partnership with one of the industry’s largest publishers. Stream registers more than 15 million users, which will now receive access to games such as Spore (plus the first expansion), Warhammer Online, Need For Speed Undercover, Mass Effect, Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, and SiN Episodes: Emergence, FIFA Manager 09, Command & Conquer Red Alert 3, Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge and many others.
"We are pleased to extend our holiday titles to gamers worldwide via Steam—a revolutionary technology that is one of the game industry's most successful digital distribution services," said John Pleasants, President of Global Publishing and COO of EA.
At first, EA appeared not to be interested in appearing on Stream, as it continued with its own digital distribution system – the EA Download Manager – available on the company’s Web site. Still, gamers were not attracted by the idea of having EA software on their systems and that is why the company decided on providing its clients with this non-intrusive tool that will provide access to all of the company’s biggest hits.
Stream’s platform is filled with third-party publishers, including EA’s rival Ubisoft, and this latest collaboration will surely boost its appeal to gamers everywhere.
