As the global warming is widely accepted, carmakers try to adapt to the new “eco” trend. A few years ago, the hybrid technology, which combines a combustion engine with an electric motor, was the way to go. These days, a fully electric-powered car is more than a dream, it is a dream coming true.
However, manufacturers are dealing with many problems in their quest for the perfect electric car. As an example, today’s batteries are very large and particularly heavy and they still have low capacities, so a battery-powered car has a disappointingly limited range.
In addition, due to the economic crisis, the hype that was created around hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius, has come to an end, as these types of automobiles are significantly more expensive than their petrol-powered siblings.
Still, Toyota, Nissan, Daimler and Tesla expect that the revenue from electric cars and electric parts will gradually increase by time, as all of these companies stated that they would invest in research labs and battery production.
As an example, Nisan representatives pointed out that the company is planning to build several facilities that will be able to manufacture over 200,000 batteries every year, in order to be fit to hybrid cars. In addition, Tesla announced that it would supply batteries and electric parts to Mercedes-Benz, as the German carmaker is planning to manufacture 1,000 battery-powered Smart city cars.
Therefore, as the economic crisis is hitting the vast majority of petrolheads, a low-cost and well-designed hybrid or electric car might be the answer in the near future.
