In Zimbabwe, the upcoming elections seem to bring tensions
among the involved parties. Apparently more than 80 Zimbabwean opposition
activists have been attacked by pro-government militants all over the country
including the eastern province of Manicaland and Matabeleland in the west.
Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader, received the most
votes with his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) but unfortunately it turns
out that he didn’t get over the 50% needed to be declared winner directly. The
dispute at this point regards the different claims of the two political
adversaries – Morgan Tsvangirai and President Robert Mugabe who demanded a
recount of the votes, as he shows no sign of stepping aside quietly.
At the same time, police has arrested at least seven
election officials, accused of tampering with Mugabe’s legitimate earned votes
and leaving him without 5,000 of his electors. President Robert Mugabe is well
known for his long presidential run of 28 years and also for indulging
throughout this period in a ruthless campaign for complete power and control.
According to BBC News 20 supporters of independent
presidential candidate Simba Makoni have been attacked in the Nyamandhlovu
area, north of Bulawayo and in Manicaland more than 60 families were thrown out
of their houses by so-called “war veterans.”
An ex-army officer told a BBC contributor "People are
being beaten for supporting the MDC," making the police investigate the
nature of these allegations.
At this point, the race is still opened and surely many more
“efforts” will be made in order to complete a successful campaign.
