Edie Falco to Star in Showtime Series as Irreverent Nurse

Edie Falco has finally been convinced to return to television after her phenomenal run on “The Sopranos,” for a Showtime comedy series where she will play an opinionated New York City nurse with a complicated personal life.

Edie Falco’s portrayal of mob wife Carmella Soprano earned her six Emmy nominations during the show’s 8-year life, of which three were ultimately wins.

The actress now returns to the small screen, in a yet-unnamed Showtime comedy that will have her star as a NYC nurse with strong opinions, a strong will and, adds the cable network, a personal life that is “precarious, unpredictable and demanding in ways that she is surprisingly not always prepared for.”

The new show will resemble “Weeds,” in that it will be a dark comedy. It will be filmed in New York and the network is rooting for a premiere sometime late this year. The pilot will be a co-production of Showtime and Lionsgate Television, Forbes.com reports.

“To be bringing Edie Falco to Showtime is both a privilege and an honor,” Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime, said in announcing Falco’s participation.

“She sits firmly in the pantheon of the great actresses of our day, and to have found a show and a great role that meets her standards after six seasons of The Sopranos is our distinct pleasure and great fortune. Bada bing is all I can think of to say!”

Edie Falco played a regular character in another HBO series, “Oz.” She has had recurring roles on “Law & Order” and “Homicide: Life on the Street.” It was her role as the wife of mob boss Tony Soprano that earned her three Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actress, as well as two Golden Globes for best performance by an actress and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for best actress.

“My time on ‘The Sopranos’ was so rich and full,” she said in announcing her new role for Showtime. “The challenge has been finding something else that would excite me. This character and the writing are truly thrilling.”
