NBC has announced that its hit sitcom “30 Rock” will benefit from the appearance of “Soprano” actress Edie Falco on three episodes of its new season.
Edie Falco played Carmela Soprano, wife of mob boss Tony Soprano, on the HBO series “The Sopranos” for nearly eight years. Edie’s role on the show earned her three Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actress, as well as two Golden Globes for best performance by an actress and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for best actress.
She will now trade in the “Soprano” drama and tension for some comic relief in “30 Rock,” a sitcom about a “Saturday Night Live”-type television show, the AP announces.
“I have laughed out loud at this show, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with such great comic actors,” Edie Falco said of her role on “30 Rock” in a statement from NBC.
“We're thrilled to have such an amazing actress come join us,” series creator and star Tina Fey said Thursday. “Also, a lot of guys on our crew want ‘The Sopranos’ ending explained to them.”
Tina Fey was a writer and cast member of “Saturday Night Live” for some six years and has based “30 Rock” on her experience there. The sitcom co-stars Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski. Its second season on NBC debuts on Oct. 4.
“30 Rock” has been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards, including for outstanding comedy series. Both Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin have been nominated for outstanding lead actress, lead actor respectively, in a comedy series.
Edie Falco played a regular character in another HBO series, “Oz.” She has had recurring roles on “Law & Order” and “Homicide: Life on the Street.”
The last episode of “The Sopranos” famously and confusingly ended with a dark screen, leaving fans to rely on their own imagination.
